Jaw-Dropping new string AMAZES users…
September 28 is a milestone in the life of the new WeissCANNON TurboTwist. Today marks the 4th month that this product has been available in the USA and we continue to have trouble keeping it in stock due to high customer demand.
For all the strings we have playtested and introduced through the years, none offers the unique playing characteristics of the TurboTwist. It is truly exceptional, extraordinary and without any peer in the world of string products. Our customers agree and refuse to stop raving about this fantastic product.
What makes it unique? Well it is constructed out of a poly-based blend of elements and chemicals that are coaxially twisted. It is heated, cooled, reheated through a complex and patented manufacturing process. It uses a special blend of chemical additives unique to only WeissCANNON, meaning knock-offs will be hard pressed to ever replicate the performance. And what a performance it is. While it is not unusual to receive email messages from customers who have been delighted to discover some of the string products we offer, none has generated as much insanely positive feedback, as quickly as the TurboTwist.
So, we ask again in a rhetorical kind of way, what are the characteristics that make it so unique? It is in the poly-based family, but it is a rebel. The level of comfort, the power level and the feel will make the user swear s/he is hitting with a crisp synthetic. In fact, because of the high level of elasticity, the manufacturer suggests stringing at the same tension as multis. No need to drop tension like you do with firmer poly-based strings. These strings, like natural gut, need a bit higher tension in order to tame the inherent power.
Even though the feedback you receive will make you think you are hitting with a synthetic, properly strung you are going to realize the control you get with a poly-based string. It truly is remarkable. The spin potential with this string, in a full stringbed setup, is as good or better than any. You will be hard-pressed to find a more spin friendly setup.
As an added bonus, over the past 4 months we have found the longevity of the string, (the amount of time it holds playing properties), has exceeded reasonable expectations. In fact we pulled out a racquet orginally strung with it in mid April (5 months ago) and won a league tennis match last week. The racquet played great. When we got back to the shop and measured the stringbed stiffness, we were shocked to see it was still locked in at a DT reading of 38. A representive loss of 12 – 13% which has locked in after approx. 3 hours of play. This string does experience an initial tension loss on par with most synthetics, but after the initial loss, it locks in and holds properties for a prolonged period of time. In terms of durability, it is poly-based string like performance all the way.
The TurboTwist is an entirely new breed of string animal. It does not fit into the poly-based string kingdom, nor does it fit into the world of synthetics. Rather it is a class of it’s own. In a word, it is INIMITABLE.
A new gauge, 1.24mm will soon be available to compliment the current 1.18mm version. If the characteristics of this string sound appealing to you, we encourage you to give it a playtest and experience the completely unique sensation for yourself.

WeissCANNON Turbotwist – Initial review
So who really cares if the coil memory of this product makes the installation process take a couple minutes longer??? It is soooo worth it!!!!
The performance of the new WeissCANNON Turbotwist is shockingly good. It not only exceeded, it SHATTERED all reasonable expectations. This string clearly possesses all of the potential to be brobdingnagian, a literal giant in world of poly-based string products.
First the technical stuff. In a nutshell WeissCANNON uses chemicals unique to them in the production of highly elastic co-polymer fibers which are twisted approximately200 times around a longitudinal axis. The result of this process is a poly-based string unlike any other we have seen to date. The performance is unbelievably solid.
The new WeissCANNON Turbotwist succeeds at finally reaching the illusive goal that string manufacturers have been aiming for with new poly-based strings over the past several years. It is a string that offers the control and spin of a traditional poly-based string along with the comfort, feel and power of a multi. The Turbotwist could very easily become the holy grail of strings for many of today’s players.
In our playtest we were impressed with the wide array of characteristics the string displayed. In all of our years of playtesting poly-based strings, we had not experienced a string that was as versatile as the Turbotwist. First off, we found plenty of spin. While most of the poly-based strings do a good job of biting the ball, this string is exceptionally good in the area of spin generation. Players who rely on spin are going to appreciate the way this string digs into the ball to produce rapid RPM’s. Perhaps equally or more impressive than the spin, was the overall comfort the string offered. If I did not know it was a poly-based string I would have guessed it was a crisp multi, along the lines of a Bi-Phase or Supreme. The power level impressed as did the control. It is easily the most lively poly-based string I have tested, and best of all, the power was completely controllable.
The test string was installed on April 24. One month plus three days later, May 27, the string had experienced a total tension loss of approx. 13.6% which is more than acceptable for a poly-based string product.
Because our playtest is limited, there are still several questions remaining to be answered. The string is only produced in a 1.18mm version (some would call it a 17L gauge, we call it an 18). We do not know how durable the string will be nor do we know how it will stand up to huge hitters and frequent string breakers. We do not yet know how long the string will hold playability in terms of court hours. While comfortable, we do not know how players with sensitive arms will respond to the string. In other words we do not know if it will be a poly-based option for those with sensitive elbows…early indications, however, are very promising. We do not yet know how the string will behave in hybrid situations.
Turbotwist sets are now available! Click here to order directly.
We invite our customers to be among the first to discover this exceptional new product that has the potential to alter the string manufacturing landscape. We invite you to help us find answers to the unknowns we posted above.
This string proves it is not possible to judge a book by the cover. It feels extremely stiff and wirey during the installation process. The level of comfort and court performance is a shocking and stark contrast to what is expected based on the installation experience. For more on our installation impressions please see our previous blog entry on this topic.
Please feel free to ask us questions about this string here as well as posting your experiences.

WeissCANNON 6StarString – early rumblings
The WeissCANNON 6StarString has yet to officially hit the US shores and already it is one of the most popular email subjects appearing in the ol’ inbox. Here are some tidbits for the curious.
1. We have two samples out and being playtested. Both in hybrids. We have identified a full-set playtester, but need the string to arrive in order to install it and conduct the test. Thus far one playtester is very happy with the overall performance. Another, who is a frequent string breaker, broke the TT before an opinion could be formed. Note…this is a player who has used poly mains and broken through them rapidly in the past. The 6StarString for him, was not as durable as a poly-based string.
2. We heard from the Australian distributor that in his playtest, the string got fuzzy rapidly. He noted, “no sign of breakage, just that old wet natural gut look.”
3. We know that this string has been in development for over 2 years and is said to have unique playing properties. The manufacturer describes it as a completely unique string product. A blend of multis and monos into a durable string that is specifically designed to enhance spin.
4. We are expecting a shipment of the 6StarString to arrive very shortly. It could arrive the end of this month or early June. The length of time it is in customs is difficult to calculate. When it does arrive we will announce it via Twitter and Facebook and have it available for purchase from our web site.
5. The manufacturer sent us an email today explaining that the “fluff that appears on the string is intentional.” The purpose is to enhance spin and control. It is an innovation that is unique in the stringing world. (See WeissCANNON web site for further details )
So what exactly is this mysterious string? How will it hold up to US playtesters? Will the “fluff” be embraced by players or will it frighten them away? Will the string be as versatile as we believe? Will it be another home run for WeissCANNON? All of these questions remain unanswered. However, YOU will help to answer them with us. Be watching because the new 6StarString will soon be available. We believe it will be a winner.

WeissCANNON TurboTwist
We are currently conducting local playtests with WeissCANNON’s newest poly-based string, TurboTwist. This 1.18mm string features an innovative construction that has been patented. The manufacturer claims it will take poly-based strings to an entirely different level. We are excited to hit with it.
We are told this poly-based string offers the highest amount of controllable power found in any poly-based string product due in part to a high amount of elasticity. In fact, WeissCANNON suggests stringing it at the same tension as you would string a regular synthetic gut offering. By contrast they recommend an 8% tension drop when using Silverstring (one of the very best and most technologically advanced poly-based strings currently available.)
We will use this blog to review the string once playtest results become available. Until then, it is important to note that the string is expected to be available sometime in the next 4 – 8 weeks.
Our stringing experience was definitely not what we expected. The TurboTwist has more coil memory than most strings we have used. It reminded us of the Head Intellistring, from the coil memory standpoint. We are hoping that the packaged sets and especially the reels will have less coil memory to fight. It was one of the more difficult strings to work with from that perspective.
We also found it offering a more “wire-like” feel to the hand than we expected, given the elasticity ratings and projected comfort. (NOTE: These comments are based only on installation impressions, not actual play). We have found strings in the past that felt stiff to the hand, yet played soft, and vice versa. Heck, Kevlar feels nice and soft to the hand, but offers virtually no elasticity so it plays like a board. The TurboTwist, by contrast, is highly elastic (based on poly-based string standards). We also noted that the first two cross strings, when pulling through, made a distinctly unique sound. It sounded very much like elephants trumpeting. No doubt this was caused by the construction which for lack of a better term is “texture-like” due to the twisting done in the manufacturing of this string. Weaving the crosses was much easier than anticipated. I feared, given the wire-like feel and coil memory that the crosses would become nightmarish to install. This was not the case, though the coil memory did remain strong through 1/2 the crosses.
Will the TurboTwist offer the playability promised? Will it take poly-based strings to an entirely new level? We’ll have to eagerly wait and see, but we definitely would not bet against Siggi Weiss and the WeissCANNON team delivering another high quality product for tennis players throughout the world to enjoy. Stay tuned for more!

WeissCANNON Explosiv! – Playtest results
As many of our blog readers are aware we have been undergoing an ongoing playtest with the incredible WeissCANNON Explosiv! multifil tennis string. The playtest has yielded amazing results. (Please see full article here!)
After more than 8 months of an extended playtest, we are going to voluntarily end the test. The string has not dropped tension in the past 6 months and 40 hours of court time. The extended playtest has proven the Explosiv! to be the absolute top performing multi available to date. If you have a customer who is not a string breaker, a customer who does not restring as frequently as he/she should then this string is definitely the string to use. It holds tension and playability for a remarkably long period of time, plus it is an extremely arm-friendly offering.
The playtest strings will most likely be removed this week as we have decided the playtest has run the course. We originally intended to end the test when the strings loss tension/playability or broke. Since none of these naturally occurring events have happened we are going to take the cutters to the string unless there is an outpouring of requests from our blog readers to continue the test.
One more update…we have a customer who installed the Explosiv! in her racquet on 7/28/08. At the time of stringing the racquet had a DT of 43. As of 2/1/09, (more than 6 months) the DT read 38, representing a loss of just 11.5%. She reportedly has logged more than 80 hours of court time to date with the strings.

WeissCANNON Explosiv! – Playtest Update
Our ongoing playtest with the WeissCANNON Explosiv! continues. In this blog entry we will share with you the actual chronology of our initial test set. We have chosen to do this because the results have literally blown our socks off. Please note we also have additional playtesters who have begun to test for durability in a full setup and in a hybrid with a poly based main. The results provided in this entry are my personal results. Note that I use a Kneissl Black Star racquet and I generally hit with moderate spin, but am not a frequent string breaker.

SUMMARY:
Current totals ( as of 3/09/09 )
Total days of playtest: 256
Overall % of Tension lost in playtest period: 15.5%
Note: On day 23 after 11.5 hours of play the tension hit a loss of approx. 13% and stabilized for an AMAZING 23 days and 15.5 hours of play before any additional signs of loss occurred. DT readings remain consistent and performance remains stable, but the DT reading has now dropped off an additional point signifying some additional loss. No visible notching/fraying or even signs of average wear. Minimal string movement. (Recall the high initial tension and dense string pattern as they must be considered). Strings are still performing extremely well.
Our intent is to continue playing the string to see when the next significant tension drop occurs or the strings break, whichever comes first. Please continue to monitor our blog for the most recent updates and information regarding our playtests of the WeissCANNON Explosiv!
On October 21, 2008 I had surgery that kept me off the courts until tonight, 12/18/08. I thought I would give it one more hit and then restring because surely it had lost something during the 59 day layoff. WRONG! Still going strong. The playtest will continue. Please check back for updates and an eventual conclusion.
CONCLUSION: Even though the strings are still going strong, I am now at a point were the demo racquet is needed to test a series of new strings. At this point in time the Explosiv! has proven itself to be a tension loss king and there is no telling how long it will hold. It has not lost any additional tension in 5 months and nearly 40 hours of play. The liveliness has deteriorated somewhat, but string movement is still not evident and there is shockingly no visible signs of wear/fraying. In short it is an absolutely AMAZING string! Still, we are going to end the extended playtest by choice with a great deal of sadness.
IN HYBRID WITH POLY BASED STRING – Playtest results
As noted earlier, we have asked playtesters to try this string as a hybrid cross with a poly based main. Our initial playtester chewed the outer coating off the string within a week. Overall while the string held playing properties it demonstrated no advantages over other multis in terms of friction wear in hybrid with a poly based string. We have never been advocates of any multi in hybrid with poly based strings, and while Explosiv! proves to be an exception in regard to traditional weaknesses of multis, it does not offer superior durability in a hybrid capacity. At least not based on this initial result. More later…
In an open pattern strung at mid tension – Playtest results
Yesterday, 9/7/08, a racquet came into the shop for some grip work that was strung with the Explosiv! on 7/28/08. After 40 days the tension loss was measured at just 13% which is consistent with the tension loss shown by our own playtest set. The exact number of hours played is unknown, but is estimated to be 15 – 20 hours of play.

WeissCANNON Explosiv!- Freakishly Good.

Early reviews from the newest offering from WeissCANNON Explosiv! reveal the string is not only a top-quality multi, but it is literally a freak of nature! In all our years of playtesting we have never been as surprised by the performance of a string as we have been with the new Explosiv!. We came into the playtest with much higher expectations than normal and when this is the case we are most often let down. In this case, we have been shocked and surprised that our expectations have been exceeded.
The string was installed last week in our Kneissl Black Star at 67 pounds. At the time of installation the DT reading was 45 on our ERT 700. Like all multis we expected a significant tension loss (10 – 16% overnight). We did not prestretch this string (we normally give all synthetics a prestretch) because we wanted to generate tension loss measurements without a prestretch for the first set and with a prestretch on the second set. The day the strings were installed we hit with it for 1.5 hours. The next day, approx. 24 hours after stringing, the DT reading shocked us with a reading of 43. Huh? Is this possible??? After a week and 4.5 hours of play the DT reading is still at an INCREDIBLE 42. This makes no sense to us as we have never had a premium multi that is not laser treated hold tension like this. The Explosiv! is a freak of nature. Our intent is string another set in the coming weeks and recheck meaurements, but so far we are beyond pleased with the tension maintenance prowess of this string.
In our racquet (18 mains) we have not experienced any significant string movement. This may be attributed to the tight pattern and high tension. We have also not observed any notching or fraying. We will continue to playtest and watch for these as they are bound to occur.
Performance wise, this string is comfortable…very comfortable. In fact it is the most comfortable string, even at high tensions, that we have ever experienced…including natural gut. We will definitely be suggesting this string for our customers who have sensitive elbows and those seeking to prevent tennis elbow.
The string offers great touch and surprisingly good access to spin. It’s not in the same family as poly-based strings, but the control is excellent and touch around the net is fantastic!!! At the high tension of our initial playtest, the power is very controlled. Less powerful than expected, but the German playtesters are reporting excellent power at lower tensions. In fact many are actually claiming the playability of the string is superior to any string they have tested, including natural gut. (Note: The German playtesters make this claim. Not a proclamation we are ready to make at this point.)
We are solidly impressed with the Explosiv! and hope to have it arrive for resale in the next 2 – 3 weeks. This string comes in a 1.30mm, but offers playability closer to what one would expect from a 17ga string…probably due to the high elasticity. Pricing has not yet been finalized, but we believe we will offer an introductory special of $11.90 per set and 660′ reels at $149.90. If you would like to be notified when the newest string in the WeissCANNON Family arrives, please send us an email message and be sure to include your email address.

Now Playing…
The newest offerings from WeissCANNON arrived yesterday and we will begin playtesting this week.
The first is generating a great deal of excitement at Guts and Glory Tennis. It is a brand new multifilament. Constructed with over 1000 ultra thin, high elastic fibers and a special resin coating. We are hoping this string will provide an alternative for those who like the soft nature of strings like Wilson NXT and Technifibre NRG. The new string comes with an ultra-cool name, EXPLOSIV!. Like all WeissCANNON products, this is a premium string designed specifically for players who seek premium performance from their tennis strings. We will blog about the results of our playtests as they become available. The prospects are exciting to us!
The second string that we will be playtesting is a brand new poly based string called Repulse. This string offers the thinnest gauge in the WeissCANNON family of poly based strings. It comes in at a svelte 1.13mm. It is designed as a comfort poly that soft hitting players will appreciate and enjoy. Be watching our blog for the playtest results and information on future availability!

WeissCANNON = High Grade
Last week we had several conversations with customers describing the difference between premium copoly strings and their lesser cost counterparts. Of course, WeissCANNON is one of the brands we carry and it clearly resides in the category of premium copolymer. But what does this really mean and how is it any different?
First, it is important to note there are virtually countless grades of polymer molecular links. WeissCANNON engineers select the ideal link for a particular string and enrich them with powerful chemicals. Some important elements for WeissCANNON include Linear Breaking Force, Loop to Loop Breaking Force, Elongation, Linear Density and Tenacity.
WeissCANNON is proud to offer (and we quote them) “the best of the best, but not the cheapest of the cheapest.” Players of advanced levels can clearly distinguish the difference in feel and overall performance of the WeissCANNON string family. It should also be noted that the WeissCANNON strings are less prone to shearing and hold playing properties longer than the majority of the competing brands.
So why not splurge and treat yourself to the “best of the best!”? WeissCANNON. Available at Guts and Glory Tennis. USRSA members qualify for volume discount pricing. Contact us for additional information.

MatchPower – Seriously Good

While we take pride in offering the entire series of premium quality WeissCANNON strings, we wish to highlight the lesser known of the “Big 3,” the MatchPower.
This is a seriously good string. The performance characteristics allow a great deal of comfort, control and durability. If you have not yet experienced the advantage of playing with copolymer strings, we invite you to consider using the MatchPower from WeissCANNON as a point of entry.
The MatchPower is manufactured using advanced copolymers and powerful chemicals that allow it to provide premium performance at a reasonable cost. It comes in the distinctive and eye-pleasing orange color as well as a more neutral shade that we call “frothy creme.” (Sounds delectable!)
From today, 2/26/08, through the end of the month this product will be offered as our “Secret Sale Item.” It is simply too good to remain obscure for tennis lovers in North America. We want to put it in your hands and thus have created deep discount pricing in order to do so.
Order before the end of the month and save $20.00 on a 660′ reel. Our regular price of $85.90 will be marked down to just $65.00. The sets are also available at a special price of just $5.90 per set (Regular price = $8.50 per set). To get the special pricing simply order online and in the comments box of the order form, indicate you read about the special on the Racquety-Yak Tennis Blog. We will then adjust the order total before running any charges against your credit card. This sale is one day only and limited to one reel or 5 sets per customer. The sale is good until midnight EST on February 29 or until supply is exhausted. USPS Priority Mail shipping charges will be applied to all orders.

Customer Question. RE: Topspin and WC Comparison
Q: Hi, John, The SilverString has been a good experience. Before purchasing a reel, I wanted to compare it to Cyber Flash or Cyber Power. My understanding is that Cyber Power, in addition to more power than Cyber Flash, has better tension maintenance. Is this true? And what else can you tell me about these strings? Your thoughts are most appreciated! Thanks! – Dave
A: The Topspin copoly strings you mention, IMO, are decent strings. You get solid performing strings at reasonable prices.
The CyberFlash is a stiffer string and while not nearly as stiff as ALU, many choose to use it as a less expensive alternative to the ALU. CyberFlash does a decent job of holding tension and playing properties. While it outlasts many of the older copolys, I would rate it as “competitive, but not necessarily the leader” when compared to the newer versions on the market. Initial loss is not bad and it holds well for the first 8 – 12 hours of play. At that point a dip in performance becomes noticeable to many, but not all.
The CyberPower as you have correctly read, is much livelier. It offers greater comfort and while the initial tension loss is very similar to other copolys, including CyberFlash, it tends to hold playing properties a bit longer. Most won’t note a performance slip until 12 – 15 or more hours of play. Even then, the rate at which performance declines is acceptable. No cliff diving with this string.
Other than that it is hard to compare the two Topspin offerings. I would be more inclined to introduce the CyberFlash to customers who have used copolys like ALU, Hurricane, etc., and are seeking a lower cost and a better overall performing alternative. If this will be the first time with a copoly, I would be more likely to introduce them to the CyberPower as it offers comfort more similar to synthetics. It is powerful and I do not drop the tension with this one.
The WeissCANNON Silverstring, by comparison, is a different animal. It is targeting the advanced player who has some experience with copolys and whose game is fine-tuned enough to feel and appreciate the quality difference you get with premium strings. It is a luxurious copolymer that tops the performance and satisfaction charts. Best of all it costs less than most of the so called “premium” copolys out there while offering superior performance.
The bottom line is all 3 are excellent choices. It just depends what you are seeking as all 3 will most likely appeal to different groups of players.

Customer Question. RE: WC Scorpion
A local stringing customer proposed the following question to us today. It is an excellent question and we believe others can benefit from the question as well as our response.
Q: My son is currently using WeissCANNON Scorpion and he loves it. However, my husband wants to know what is the next step up?

A: The WeissCANNON line of tennis strings are premium in nature. They may cost slightly more than many competing brands, but our customers will tell you the quality difference is evident. In short, WeissCANNON strings are top of the line and it is difficult to find superior products. Your son is already playing with a top-of-the line power copolymer.
Specifically the Scorpion is a powerful copolymer that provides excellent comfort. In terms of powerful copolymers, we have not found any better product currently available. The Topspin CyberPower is an excellent string, perhaps even a bit more powerful, but while it is good, it is hard to say definitively that it is superior. The Scorpion and CyberPower are clearly the top 2 strings in the power copolymer category. Honorable mention to the Signum Pro Poly Deluxe and Pro Supex Big Ace which also fall into this same category of copolymer. We do not however find them to be superior to the WeissCANNON Scorpion.
The WeissCANNON Silverstring is the benchmark by which many comfort copolymers should be measured, but it is not as lively as the Scorpion. It is consistent and excellent in all areas, but it plays differently and fills a different niche than the Scorpion.
