SomeBunny Cares – - We do!
At Guts and Glory Tennis we fully understand and appreciate the challenges the current economy can place upon families. Each Thursday the local paper publishes hundreds of foreclosures from our local county alone. It is very humbling and drives home the point that many of our neighbors and friends are feeling the economic pinch in a serious way.
Through the past several months we have learned about a number of our long-time local stringing customers who are out of work. When we learn of a customer who is struggling our inclination is to assist. To date our attempts at assistance have been ad hoc but we want to change that and formalize our commitment to assisting our established stringing customers.
Toward that end we are delighted to announce via this blog that we will be providing our established customers who have lost their jobs or who have a spouse who has lost a job a hand by reducing costs of restringing services until new employment can be secured.
Tennis can play an important role in the physical and emotional health of those who are out of work. It is an inexpensive form of exercise that provides social interaction as well as networking opportunities.
Our commitment to helping our customers play with healthy and fresh strings remains paramount. We do not want to see our customers or their families risking arm health by not stringing at their regular intervals. We also want them to continue their regular tennis routines.
To achieve this we are officially offering to assist our customers in need with discount stringing services. Just let us know your situation and we will restring your racquet with the string you have been using for whatever you can afford to pay. If you can afford the labor and not the string…the cost of string is on us. If you can afford the cost of the string, but not the labor…the cost of labor is on us. If you can not afford either at the current time, the stringing is on us. We value our loyal customers and will do our part to help keep them on court and playing with healthy equipment until they are back on their financial feet.
At Guts and Glory Tennis, we CARE about our customers. Let us know if we can assist.

KLiP Excellerator – Rockin’ the House!
Several years ago we playtested many of the KLiP offerings and came away impressed. At the time we were a much smaller operation with more limited offerings and decided not to introduce KLiP products to our local customers. (Probably not one of our wiser business decisions.) However, we always remembered the quality of the offerings. In 2009 we decided to drop a vendor who proved to be unreliable and refresh our offerings for our local stringing customers.
We are the only area stringing service bringing KLiP products to NE Atlanta and suspect many will be anxious to learn more about these products. The first offering we will discuss is the flagship product, KLiP Excellerator.
KLiP Excellerator is a premium quality multifilament string. We suspect it will be a long time, if ever, that any multi will surpass the WeissCANNON Explosiv! in terms of our complete reverence, however the KLiP offers a slightly different flavor. Excellerator is a crisper playing multi, still providing the comfort and power you would expect from a multi, and doing it better than most on the market. Unlike most premium multis it is available in 3 gauges; 16, 17 & 18.
While the Explosiv! is king in terms of soft multis, we are nearly ready to anoint Excellerator as prince of the crisp multis. The Excellerator we are playtesting is the 18ga version. It is being tested in a Kneissl Black Star. The string was installed on 1/2/09 and we strung it purposely at the high end to test durability and comfort. The stringbed stiffness (DT) as measured on the ERT 700 was 44. At the time of this blog entry the racquet has been strung for 11 days and has seen 4 hours of court time. DT = 43 which represents a minuscule initial tension loss…outstanding for any string, much less a multi, by any standard.
From a performance standpoint we have found a crispy, yet comfortable feel. The power level is greater than we expected or remembered, even at a high tension. Most importantly we have noted that while the LaserFibre Supreme was described as “boardy” and “hard” at higher tensions, this is definitely not the case with the Excellerator. Also when comparing the two, the initial tension loss for the Excellerator is LESS than that of the laser treated Supreme. Interesting…
We are anxious to see when and what happens to the performance of this string once it reaches 10 -1 5 hours of court time. We will report back and update this blog entry, so please stay tuned. Since it is an 18ga strung at a high tension it may not see that much action. We notice some string movement, nothing excessive. No notching is currently evident. Performance thus far is consistent, powerful and very pleasant. Once again, this KLiP product is impressing us and we are not alone.
UPDATE:
2/2/09 – 10 hours of court time and DT currently reads 39, representing a 12% loss. Limited string movement has not gotten any worse and durability is surprisingly good.
We have a customer who plays AA which is roughly equivalent to a 4.5 – 5.0 USTA level. She has suffered in the past from Tennis Elbow so we always use multis for her. Over the years she has tried many and the KLiP Excellerator 17 has emerged as her new favorite. According to her, it is livelier than Tecnifibre Bi-Phase, not as boardy as LaserFibre Supreme and is crisper than Yonex 880 ti and Explosiv! She prefers thin gauge, crisp multis and she reports this is the best playing string she has used to date. Given her style, preferences and game it is not surprising that the Excellerator is a perfect match for her. It may also be for you. Give it a try and see for yourself. Currently Guts and Glory Tennis is offering a KLiP Upgrade Special where you will save $4.00 off the stringing price of the Excellerator.

Who’s Stringing Your Prince “Port-Style” Racquet?

Prince tennis has long been an innovator in racquet design. Tennis players throughout the world have flocked to the new design that Prince refers to as O Ports and Speed Ports. What most tennis players do not know is that ALL of the new Prince “port” frames that have ports located on the 3 and 9 o’clock side of the frame present special stringing challenges. If not properly addressed, these challenges can lead to an inconsistent stringbed which negatively impacts overall on-court performance.
When investing in a Prince Port-Style racquet you are paying for innovative engineering to enhance overall performance, but if the racquet is not properly strung the full performance potential may never be realized. Who’s stringing your racquet? Do they know how to optimize the process so that the stringbed will be consistent and you will get the optimal performance? We do!
While the engineers of the Prince racquets are to be commended for thinking way outside of the box, the design does present stringing challenges that I suspect only a small percentage of stringers are addressing in a manner to allow the frame to provide the user with premium performance.
The first and greatest of these challenges involves the side ports. Because the ports are open, with no grommet system to secure the string in place against the frame, the top portion of the cross strings pull at a very awkward angle when tensioning. The severity of the angle varies according to location of string and size of port. This angle must be eliminated to produce a consistent string job.
Prince has attempted to address this issue by providing a special stringing tool which is an adequate alternative, but not as effective as the method we use. Prince also recommends that stringers use a turntable break to hold the racquet in place or that the stringer use brute force to keep the string in proper position while tensioning. Some reputable stringers use the later suggestion and actually refer to it as the “Hip Method.” ALL of these suggestions/ solutions lead to inconsistencies and in some instances can actually cause damage to the stringing machine or possibly the frame itself. With all due respect to my colleagues, “The Hip Method” is not a proper or consistent solution.
At Guts and Glory Tennis we were the first to share reports with fellow stringers (and Prince itself for that matter!) of a solution we found to these issues. By using a stringing technique known as 50/50 we effectively negate all of the negative issues that surround the above mentioned methods of getting the crosses installed. Our method results in the most consistent stringbed possible and allows our customers to experience optimal performance from their racquets.
We caution those not using our services that it is IMPORTANT to make sure your stringer is well versed in the 50/50 method if they are using it. This method involves starting the cross strings in the center of the frame and the starting process is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. If not properly started, the center cross strings will be installed several pounds lower that the rest of the strings and the overall result of this in terms of on-court performance is as bad or even potentially worse than the inconsistencies the ports can produce.
The second issue we have observed is that the Prince engineers have not designed string channels in the top of the frame that are deep enough to provide adequate protection to the strings. When stringing with a two-piece method, (which 50/50 is), this issue is magnified. (We have not yet seen the new EXO3 frames and hope this issue is now addressed). We have developed a stringing process whereby we have reduced the length of string in these channels to help provide extra protection until Prince sees fit to properly address this issue. (For those with Speedport racquets, look at 10 and 11 o’clock and you will see raised ridges on the headguard. This represents Prince’s very WEAK attempt to address this issue!)
The final issue we will address is the bottom ports on some of the Speedport racquets. The bottom port presents the most severe angle of all. This is one where we have not identified any better solution than the one that Prince offers. However, we do make sure to use the “loop over” method which Prince suggests and have found this yields much better and more consistent results than can be achieved without using it.
So, if you are using one of these newer, high-tech Prince racquets, you will obviously want to get the most out of it. In order to achieve this goal the racquet must be strung to optimize performance. I am suggesting in this blog that it is probable your stringer is either not aware or not addressing some of these issues and the result is an inconsistent stringbed and inconsistent results with each new stringing.
To get the best possible stringing job for your Prince Port-Style racquet we suggest using our services or find a professional stringer who is well versed in the issues. Local customers can simply give us a call 404-246-1062 to make use of our convenient racquet pick-up and delivery service. For those at a distance, we offer a mail order stringing service. Details can be found at our web site, under our Racquet Stringing From Afar section.
Bottom Line: We understand the challenges these frames present and are eager to show you that our methods to address these challenges result in the best-playing, most consistent stringbed for your Prince port-style racquet.

Stringbed stiffness…some thoughts
At Guts and Glory Tennis we use an ERT 700 tennis computer to measure the stringbed stiffness on each frame we restring for our customers. The data collected from this equipment is then entered into our customer database to help us provide the most consistent stringing service to our customers.
The ERT 700, (and newer but less sophisticated ERT 300 model), each provide a measurement known as the “Dynamic Tension (DT)” or as we prefer to call it, “stringbed stiffness.” This number tells us how stiff the stringbed is given the context of the racquet. For instance, in general, racquets with denser string patterns provide a stiffer stringbed than those with more open patterns. Likewise stiffer frames provide a stiffer stringbed than more flexible frames when strung at identical tensions.
This number is extremely important because it is this number that represents what the stringer is trying to achieve for the player. This number determines the feeling and playability of the racquet. The reference tension, (what most players provide the stringer), is a guide to get to this number. If the player switches string-type or gets a new racquet, the stringer who uses this equipment can help the player get to this desired end-point.
At Guts and Glory Tennis we make sure that all racquets strung for our local players measure the same (+/-1 SDDT) with each stringing. The racquets are measured the moment they are removed from the stringing machine and checked to make sure the desired stringbed stiffness is achieved. If not, the racquet is restrung at no additional charge to the customer. In fact, the customer will never know the racquet was restrung because whenever he/she receives the racquet from us it is guaranteed to be the same as prior stringings. It is all part of the overall of quality service that our customers can expect from us.
In addition to being recorded in our database, the DT is listed on the bag tag we provide you. This way if you see us at the courts we can take a measurement to see how much the stringbed stiffness has dropped. (You are also welcome to stop by our shop for a personal reading). When the loss reaches 20% or higher (note: for some players a little higher and some a bit lower) it may be time to restring in order to maintain the desired on-court performance. Note that in 2009 we intend to begin recording your DT information in a portable device that we will have with us so that we can take your readings and have a sense of what it means whether you have your bag tag with you or not.
Top notch professional stringers will invest in quality equipment and products for their customers. They will possess the expertise to use the equipment and products to provide the most benefits to their customers. At Guts and Glory Tennis we are proud of the equipment we have invested in and even more proud of our ability to maximize it to bring the best possible service to our customers.

Our Inventory = Another HUGE Advantage
The other day we were asked why we provide so many string offerings to our customers? The answer is simple. Customers have different preferences and needs and we want to be equipped to meet these needs in the best manner possible. Many local stringers and stores have core offerings consisting of basic string types. These meet basic needs and can be analogous to an ice cream store carrying the basic flavors; vanilla, chocolate and perhaps strawberry. At Guts and Glory Tennis we carry a huge offering of string flavors for our customers to select. With such a large inventory we can tickle the the tennis tongue and delight the tennis pallet better than our competitors. Yet another fantastic reason to choose Guts and Glory Tennis for your local stringing needs.
We carry over 50 variety of strings and when you consider we offer these in various colors and gauges, our total inventory consists of over 125 sku’s. With this arsenal at our disposal we are able to help you find a string type that will enhance your game (or look good or both!). Each player has unique preferences and needs. We take into account style of play, racquet type, string bed density, physical challenges and previous experience with string offerings when helping our customers identify a string setup that will work for them. To go back to our ice cream analogy, while a basic vanilla may meet your needs, perhaps a french vanilla or vanilla with the bean may be something you prefer. We offer the subtleties and varieties that others with smaller inventory can not provide to their customers.

Our stringing Kung Fu is very strong!

Bear in mind, stringing customers who venture outside of the friendly confines of Guts and Glory Tennis seem to always find their way home. Just this week we had 3 former customers confess to going elsewhere for racquet stringing. Saving a few $’s by giving their racquets to an independent local basement stringer, literally stringing at basement prices, seemed like a good idea at the time. Unfortunately for them, they soon discovered the racquet wasn’t playing the same. Why?
It could be any number of reasons, but the common denominator is quality. From our knowledge of Atlanta’s highest quality string collection to our top quality equipment, to our anal pursuit of perfection, it is hard to duplicate our magic. As the kids would say, our stringing Kung-Fu is very strong!
We welcome all former customers back with open arms. We understand the temptation to save a few dollars is a well-baited trap, but the quality we provide is worth the cost. Keep in mind, our costs remain lower than most local tennis specialty shops while we offer a superior string selection and vastly superior service.
In addition to welcoming several customers back this week we also welcomed back one of our juniors. Her case is interesting. Her father purchased a stringing machine in order to string her racquets and save some money. As it turns out this little tournament dynamo prefers to have her racquets strung at Guts and Glory Tennis. “Thanks Dad, but I like the racquet better when John strings it…plus I win more!” Like we said, our stringing Kung-Fu is very strong.

Stringing from afar…
Guts and Glory Tennis provides custom stringing services via mail for customers who do not reside in our service area. We have a number of customers throughout the continental USA who choose to use our services. Many of our customers using this service are badminton players while another group are those seeking a stringer for PowerAngle racquets. The majority, however, are just league tennis players who want a string job done right. Yesterday we received an email from one of our “Stringing From Afar” customers that we thought we would share on the blog.
Dear John, I hope you are well, and I hope you remember me ...SNIP...(from Fort Lee, New Jersey). You did the most AMAZING jobwith my last racquet! Too good for your business.I still play with it and the stringing holds and feels great. I just got the follow-up model (Head Prestige Microgel and ordered it strung with a hybrid from tennis warehouse). It's O.K., but I know you can do wonders, so I am planning to send you this one for a string job. Especially since I am sure you have some new "tricks" and options in stringings for playability (feel), control and power. In the meantime, I improved a little, so I hope I can handle whatever you suggest
!...SNIP...

Professionalism & Personal Care – Service You Can Trust!
Last week we serviced a new customer who reminded me again about the value our customers receive by using our stringing services. We are not the least expensive in town, but our pricing is generally lower than the specialty retailers and is definitely not out of line given the overall quality of personal care and assistance we provide.
Anyway, last week my new customer asked me how fast I could string a racquet. He explained that he was the former manager of the golf and tennis department for a sporting goods retail establishment in town. He went on to tell me about a test he was given in which 3 racquets were in a large brown paper bag. His task was to select a racquet, unseen, and string it in 10 minutes for certification. Admittedly I have never heard of such a test, but that is not to doubt his story. He then went on to brag about the speed at which he and his staff could knock out racquets. They averaged approximately 10 minutes per racquet.
After lifting my jaw from the ground and trying not to let my face show complete horror, I responded to his question. “I really do not pay much attention to how fast I am stringing a racquet, but I do know it takes me much longer than 10 minutes. In fact, I do not mean to be disrespectful in any way, but I have to question how you and your staff were able to accomplish the task so fast?”
As the conversation continued I learned that they did not pull tension on every string. I was told “we would juice up the tension and pull 2-3-4 strings at once…the customers couldn’t tell the difference. It’s not like they are professionals.” He then went on to admit that he would never be able to string his own racquet using the process that was used for the customers of the retail establishment.
For those reading this entry who are not familiar with stringing, pulling tension on multiple strings at one time is not an acceptable method of stringing. Yes, it is faster, but the results are wildly inconsistent and unprofessional. It leads to uneven stringbed stiffness creating an unbalanced and unpredictable response to the ball off of the strings. In a nutshell: It’s amateurish.
Morale of the Story: Just because a retailer exists and has a tennis department does not mean they provide quality services. It can be tempting to cut corners in pursuit of the almighty dollar and some stringers apparently follow this practice.
At Guts and Glory Tennis we never cut corners and you can be assured your racquet is strung to the highest possible standards using the most modern and best equipment. Here are some of the advantages of stringing with us:
1. Personal service. Most area tennis retailers employ multiple stringers. Each stringer uses his or her own technique. In fact, when using the same equipment with the same string at the same tension the final results can often vary from stringer to stringer. Because we have one full-time professional stringer who strings all our racquets, you will have a consistent string job that will play the same with each and every stringing service. The top professional players hire personal stringers so that they will have consistently strung racquets. Using Guts and Glory Tennis provides you the same personal and consistent service that the professionals receive for a fraction of the cost.
2. We offer free racquet pick-up and delivery for customers who reside in our service delivery area.
3. We have personally playtested each string we carry and have one of the widest selection of strings available. Our first-hand knowledge of our products allows us to provide you with information and assistance to help you select a string and tension that will optimize your game.
4. We offer a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. We fully stand behind our products and services.
5. We treat your racquet as if it were our own. No shortcuts and the level of service that you can trust.

We are Different!

Guts and Glory Tennis is a different kind of company. We stand out from the competition in a variety of ways. We are not afraid to objectively test new products and we are often the first to bring them to market.
Another key difference is our extreme commitment to provide quality products and services to our customers. We are full time tennis equipment professionals and we take a great deal of pride in “knowing our stuff.” When working with us, you get the full benefit of our years of knowledge coupled with an emphasis on customer care.
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to assist one of my local stringing customers. She was extremely upset because she had purchased the new Prince Platinum racquet from a local tennis specialty store and she could not keep the ball in play. The racquet had entirely too much power for her game. It was eons away in terms of specs from her previous racquet. i.e. previous racquet flex = 50, new racquet flex = 71. Had the local retailer been focused on the customer they may have asked questions about her game, style of play, hitting preferneces etcetera. They then would have steered her to a more appropriate racquet choice. However, the lure of a fast sale on a new and expensive racquet was simply too much temptation and the deed was done.
In addition to encouraging her to purchase an inappropriate racquet, they also strung it with powerful strings…the dreaded double whammy! The specs of this Price racquet, IMO, are absolutely horrible. If I were a traditional shop owner I would reject this racquet refusing to carry it. I wouldn’t give a darn if the markup was 250% and it was the hottest selling racquet on the planet. The bottom line is that I believe it is the antithesis of arm friendly and I refuse to subject my customers to a racquet that is produced to what I consider to be grossly inappropriate specifications. It is, simply put, an arm problem in waiting.
We were able to use a new technology string just brought to the market from Topspin tennis to tame the power. I seriously doubt if any local stringers or tennis retailers have knowledge of the string or carry it as part of their inventory. The difference is, we do! After playing, the customer told me the racquet performed like a dream for her. We were able to successfully bring the power level to something acceptable, but I fear how long she can play without damaging her arm. The Platinum is simply too powerful to use any of my beloved multis or natural gut and too large to use our Sweet Spot Enhancement stringing method with any success. This will be the ultimate test for the new Topspin Energy string.
Anyway I just think it is interesting to see what we are doing compared to our competitors. This week, while local tennis retailers are bringing in and selling goo-gobs of Prince O3 Speedport Platinums, we are bringing in the much lesser bally-hooed Kneissl Black Star. For grins and giggles, look at the specs!

In terms of arm health please keep the following risk factors in mind.
1. Racquets weighing less than 11 oz.
2. Racquets with a stiffness over 67
3. Racquets that are head heavy.
Any combination of one or more of the above make the racquet particularly susceptible to contributing to tennis elbow. There is simply no comparison between the two in terms of arm health. Winner = Kneissl.
In the long run, the sales of the Prince O3 Speedport racquet will be a boom to our local stringing business as many will suffer from elbow and control issues and will ultimately seek us out. Our knowledge of equipment will end up helping them, but realistically they may have to select a different, more arm-friendly racquet.

Spring Stringing

Spring is in the air. Baseball players are reporting to training camp, the NCAA basketball tournament is on the horizon, and ALTA team practices will begin very soon. To be at the top of your game, your equipment must be in top form and ready for the on court battles that are looming.
Guts and Glory Tennis offers the very best selection of premium tennis strings on the market. John, the owner, has personally playtested every string brand and type that is sold. Because customer satisfaction is 100% guaranteed, we do not carry products that do not meet our standards of excellence.
When you are on the court you want your equipment to perform at its best. By using Guts and Glory Tennis you are not only getting premium service, but you are being served by a company who thoroughly understands their product and will work with you to find a string or combination of strings to optimize your equipment and your game. You get a level of expertise and passion for excellence that is clearly extraordinary and virtually unmatched.
We cater to the customer by providing FREE pickup and delivery (for those residing in our service area), 24 hour or faster service, 1 hour stringing by appointment when needed and prices that are generally lower than our pro shop competitors. We use professional state-of-the-art stringing equipment (Babolat Star 5 stringing machine) and because we have one full-time stringing professional, you are essentially getting all of the benefits of hiring a personal stringer.
Many of the tennis greats, Agassi, Sampras, Federer, hire a professional personal stringer to travel with them. Why? Because when one person strings your racquets, you get a level of consistency that can not be matched. By stringing with Guts and Glory Tennis you are getting the same level of service as the top touring professionals. Where else can you find a shop where your racquet is always strung by the same full-time racquet stringing professional? It’s a business model that is simply not seen, and provides the best level of service for you.
In addition to stringing, you may want to also pay attention to your grip. Today’s cushioned synthetic grips need to be replaced more frequently than leather grips in order to maintain their cushioning and dampening properties. If the grip is in good shape and you use an overgrip, these should be replaced frequently. We will be happy to assess your grip/overgrip and make any needed changes for you when we provide stringing services.
If you haven’t yet experienced the professional level of service provided by Guts and Glory Tennis we invite you to give us a try. First time customers get $3.50 off stringing services and your racquet will play like a finely tuned machine when we are finished. Afterall, we are the “Gosh Darn Best Stringing Service on the Planet!”
